Green Valley Recreation, Inc. is a non-profit organization serving the leisure and social needs of the adult retirement community of Green Valley , Arizona .   Green Valley Recreation (GVR) owns and operates 13 Recreation Facilities throughout Green Valley, in addition to one Member Service Center. There are two types of facilities available to the membership: Major Centers and Satellite Centers. These facilities, in total, are valued at over $18 million.  The Centers provide over 126,000 square feet of interior space - equivalent to more than two football fields in area.  GVR provides many services and activities to a private membership base of over 12,400 households, an estimated 27,000 persons.

Major Centers are large recreation complexes serving the various geographic regions of Green Valley, and range in size from 15,000 square feet to 25,000 square feet. Typical amenities available at a Major Center include: an auditorium, social and meeting rooms, a catering kitchen, swimming pool with a spa, hobby/craft studios, a fitness center, tennis courts, and shuffleboard. Green Valley Recreation History

GVR was created in 1978 from the merger of two previous neighborhood recreation organizations. The Community Recreation Association of Green Valley (CRAGV) was an organization centered around the first recreation center in the community located at Abrego and Esperanza and primarily serviced the Fairways homeowners and the apartments areas. The other merging organization was The Community Club formed and sponsored by Fairfield Communities, whose primary facility was located at La Canada and Vista Hermosa. Fairfield was building in the community since early 1972.

By 1978 the members of both merging organizations saw the value of consolidating to provide a single unified leisure services organization in Green Valley serving the needs of its adult retirement population. This philosophy has been perpetuated for more than 25 years now to permit GVR to maintain a core social and recreation fabric which stretches throughout the community. Over the years GVR has led the way in attempting to build a sense of community. In fact many organizations have formed their groups by holding early meetings in a GVR recreation center, including numerous local churches.

Although GVR has over the years become one of the largest employers within the community, its uniqueness comes from the synergy between staff and the more than two thousand volunteers giving time to the organization. An elected volunteer board of directors control policy, while staff implement programs. Volunteers give time in every aspect of GVR from monitoring at the swimming pools to providing fitness center orientations. GVR also has more than 60 special interest clubs, who provide tremendous programming on their own with minimal support from staff.

Over the past 25 years GVR has been a leading factor to attract retirees to Green Valley. In retrospect, it would seem extremely difficult to imagine what might have happened to the general development of this area without the enjoyable leisure opportunities provided by Green Valley Recreation
